History 811 focuses on the world of historical research and professional historians. The principal work in this course is the research and writing of a substantial paper in a field related to the Ph.D. dissertation of each student. This course emphasizes primary research and mastery of the relevant secondary literature. A related goal is to introduce students to the research world of professional historians with an emphasis on ethical standards, norms, and methods. Final papers should be over 25 pages of text with appropriate citations and bibliography. By the first class meeting, students are expected to have a research topic and primary source base identified and the topic approved by the dissertation adviser.Credits: 3
