Section Information for Fall 2020
Is Asia a ‘winner’ of globalization? Why does Japan react very slowly to the COVID19 pandemic compared to other countries like Singapore and South Korea? What kind of online comments would Chinese Communist Party most likely censor? What do people in Hong Kong protest against? What is the ‘trash island’ off the coast of Thailand? If you find any of these questions interesting, this is a class for you.
We are going to talk about various topics including democratic regime, welfare system, immigration, financial crisis, territorial disputes, transitional justice and human rights in the context of East and Southeast Asia. The course is open to all Mason students but should be of particular interest for GLOA majors with one of the four concentrations: Global Economy and Management; Global Governance; International Development; Asia. The course counts toward Asia-Pacific and North East Asian Studies Minor's `elective courses' requirement. The course also fulfills the Mason Core `Synthesis' requirement (definitely for GLOA but also for any major).
GLOA 400 DL1 is a distance education section.
