Section Information for Spring 2021
In reaction to the slave trade, generations of Black intellectuals have tried to invent and foster forms of solidarity between Africa and its diaspora. What has become of the Pan-African imagination today? We will explore several possible answers to this question with a focus on the African continent itself. Our journey will take us through an overview of historical Pan-African movements to contemporary concerns such as international terrorism and mass migration.Our objects of study will include texts, films, and pop culture from Senegal, Mali, Nigeria, and South Africa, via the Marvel blockbusterBlack Panther.
