Section Information for Spring 2018

This course is designed to train students to think and write as historians.  We will do this by studying the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War Two.  We will focus on the decision by U.S. authorities to use nuclear weapons, and we will also examine how the bombings were experienced and remembered in both Japan and the U.S.  Students will examine the various ways in which historians have approached these topics, and will also learn how to investigate them on their own.  In the process, students will acquire the basics of historiography and historical research methods.
