Section Information for Spring 2012

In this course we will look at some of the ways in which the relatively new field of Atlantic history has been applied to the study of migration between Europe and Britain’s American colonies prior to American independence. Readings will cover the European background and migrants’ motives for leaving the Old World; the mechanics of migration; strategies for either maintaining a home culture in the New World or adapting to new conditions there; transatlantic communications; and the phenomena of return and repeat migrations. This course will satisfy the “Origins to 1861” distribution requirement in U.S. history OR the “Origins to 1789” requirement in European history.
