Alexandra was a double major in Global Affairs and Government and International Politics. She chose a concentration in Russia and Central Asia in Global Affairs and gradated with honors in her Government major. With these academically-challenging choices, she was well-prepared for her goal of graduate studies in international affairs and a career in public service.
Since graduating, Alexandra has been an Environmental Analyst with the Department of Transportion, through which she was chosen as a Truman-Albright Fellow.
During her time at Mason, she conducted original research for a project entitled "Form Over Substance: How appearance, color and fashion can destroy a politician's image" through the Undergraduate Apprenticeship Program. Stemming from this work, Alex published a paper called “Character Assassination, Women, and Politics: Trends and Observations" in the GMReview, Mason's undergraduate scholarly journal.
Among her contributions to the Mason community, many revolved around sustainability -- volunteer work with Mason's Environmental Action Group, membership on the faculty-staff Energy Roundtable, recruiting for National Powershift 2009, an internship in Mason's Office of Sustainability and work with a variety of organizations throughout the DC metropolitan area as part of her work with Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity.
Alex also helped coauthor a proposal for the Patriot Green Fund (PGF) with the Environmental Action Group in spring 2009. The PGF called for a green fee to be implemented to fund student scholarship and capital improvement projects. After three years of lobbying and campaigning, the fund has received a substantial pledge from Mason's administration. Alex cites this success as one of her most proud accomplishments.
Her endeavors did not go unrecognized during her time at Mason. She received two Mason Golden Quill Awards, one for work with the Environmental Action Group and another related to the GMU Gardening Crew. Alex was selected as the 2011 Truman Scholar from Virginia, a very prestigious award. She was also awarded the Dean's Challenge Scholarship for 2011-2012.
