On February 14, Mason’s Provost David Wu presented Global Affairs major Emily Olson and others of the university’s highly achieving student athletes with a Provost Student Athlete Award. Emily, a track and field athlete and Global Affairs senior will graduate in May with a concentration in Russia and Central Asia and a minor in Chinese language.

The Peter N. Stearns Provost Student Athlete Awards were established ten years ago to recognize the outstanding academic achievement of students who are also deeply to committed to excellence in their chosen sport. Honored student athletes have earned at least 38 credit hours at Mason and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher.

With graduation right around the corner, Emily is excited about her future in which she will use the skills of perseverance and determination she has learned through being a scholar athlete. Emily is currently a semi-finalist for a Fulbright award to teach English in Bulgaria after graduation. According to Dr. Lanitra Berger, who has been working closely with Emily on her preparation for the award,  “Emily is a bright, talented and service oriented young woman. Her commitment to cultural exchange led her to apply for a Fulbright award and receive an interview. I know that she will use her studies in global affairs to make lasting and positive change in the world.”
