Turning Advocacy into Action through Congressional Outreach

Global Affairs student Yasmine Ammar had the opportunity to intern with the American Federation of Ramallah, Palestine (AFRP), an organization dedicated to preserving Palestinian culture and advocating for community-led initiatives, an institution her family has been involved with since childhood. Over the summer, Yasmine primarily worked on congressional outreach and coordinated AFRP’s annual Day of Action, a summit where young leaders from across the country advocate for Palestinian human rights on Capitol Hill and build power within the Palestinian-American community. The experience gave her a front-row seat to how policy is shaped and helped her develop critical skills in relationship building with congressional offices, strategic outreach, and community political education. Global Affairs student Zara Sarwar was selected as a U.S. delegate for the 18th Korea-America Student Conference in Seoul, South Korea, and New York. With this year's theme being "Constructing Identity in a Globalized World," Zara and her peers explored how cultural, political, and generational forces shape identity across borders. Her group specifically examined how digital platforms mobilize activism within national contexts and contribute to transnational awareness and solidarity. Global affairs major Joey Siu was raised in Hong Kong and began her journey as an activist during the 2019 pro-democracy movement, which ultimately led her to seek refuge in the U.S. She continues her advocacy as co-founder and spokesperson for Amnesty International Hong Kong Overseas and testified before the U.S. Senate this past summer.
