Where are you from?
I am from Afghanistan, but I was born and grew up in Annandale, Virginia.
What was your undergraduate major, and from which university did you graduate?
I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BA in Music.
What are some causes/ issues you care about? Why?
I am an advocate of cultural expression and because of my interest in countries in conflict, I am deeply concerned about the destruction of culture, art and history.
What work/intern/volunteer experience do you have and how has it prepared you for your studies?
I have worked in Afghanistan for cultural organizations involved in both the tangible and intangible conservation of heritage. I have also volunteered in Greece for many months interpreting for humanitarian lawyers working on asylum cases. I am not sure that my experiences abroad have 'prepared' me for my studies, but I have reached the conclusion that pursuing graduate studies and acquiring a deeper understanding of the developing world is absolutely essential when working in foreign countries with other international experts.
What aspects of Mason made you choose to study here?
Mason's proximity to Washington DC is the main reason I want to attend GMU. The DMV is one of the most diverse places I have lived in and it is a relief being back in the area.
What do you hope to accomplish while at Mason?
Coming from a completely opposite background in the arts, I have a lot to learn about international relations and foreign policy. I hope to gain a solid foundation in policy writing and I would like to also pursue writing in a journalistic manner while at Mason.
What are your hobbies?
I like to collect. I’ve accepted that I am a hoarder and so I’ve refined that into collecting what I consider to be artifacts i.e. jewelry, hats, rugs and so on. Naturally I love museums.
What are you most looking forward to while living in the DC area?
The international community, embassy events and the museums. There is so much happening in this area and after being away for so many years I am excited to be back.
What is your favorite thing about being a student?
An excuse to drink coffee all day and sit in the same coffee shop day after day... learning is cool too.
Which languages do you speak?
Dari(Farsi), some basic Pashto and Arabic as well.
What was the last book you read? Do you recommend it? (Why/why not)
Reporter, Seymour Hersh’s memoir. Highly recommended. Hersh has lived an incredible life. Also Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All by Jonas Jonassan. Incredible wit, will make you laugh.
