Internship with One Community Social Services

As an immigrant from Pakistan and a Global Affairs major, I am trying to explore various career paths and options for when I finish my degree. I have realized that internships are a great way to gain experience and learn new skills that can be beneficial in the long run. Being an immigrant myself, I have always wanted help others like me so they can live a full life.

As a Global Affairs major, I have gained more knowledge about public affairs around the world. It has helped me improve my communication skills and has taught me about diverse cultures. In the Fall of 2023, I had the opportunity to intern at a nonprofit organization called One Community Social Services that works for refugees/migrants in the local region. The organization was co-founded by an alum of Global Affairs. It helps them with basic necessities that they might need to kick start their new life in a new country. My time management skills have improved a great deal this semester as I am a full-time student, with a part time job and had this internship as well. It made me realize how important time management is given the need to balance multiple activities at once. I made sure to get my schoolwork done as well as doing all the tasks I was assigned during my internship. This internship also helped me with my organization skills and taught me so much more about how nonprofit organizations work. It takes passion and dedication to make sure these organizations are fully equipped with what they need to help others as well as a lot of volunteer work is needed. Which adds to my advertising skills to help get more people to know about volunteering opportunities.

I am very grateful that I got to work with this organization as it will add to my experience and skills that I can use for the rest of my life. I hope to get more opportunities like these so I can build a new and better set of skills with every aspect of my academic life.
