Throughout my time as a Global Affairs major at George Mason, my professors, advisors, and peers have pushed me to take on take on new challenges. This has been both inside the classroom, such as applying and being accepted into the GLOA Honors in the Major Program, and outside of it, including through internships. This semester, I am interning with World Affairs Councils of America as the Marketing and Communications Intern. This transformative experience has strengthened my knowledge of Global Affairs and the skills necessary to succeed in my future career.
The mission of World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) is to support over 90 Councils throughout the country to develop and host events aimed at expanding their communities’ worldviews. This aligns with what I have learned in Global Affairs. This internship has given me the opportunity to share my experience of learning about global issues with others, namely through helping with preparations for the WACA National Conference. The National Conference will feature numerous International Relations professionals sharing their knowledge and perspectives on different world issues. I have been tasked with designing webpages with information about the conference, specifically information on the speakers and what the various sessions will cover. This allows potential attendees to better inform themselves about the conference so they can make the most of it.
I am looking forward to attending the WACA National Conference in November and having the opportunity to hear and meet the speakers myself. I have learned about so many complex world issues during my time as a GLOA major at Mason and am excited to add to this knowledge through attending the conference. My time interning with WACA has reinforced the importance of listening to diverse perspectives and broadening my knowledge on the challenges facing the world. It has also equipped me with skills that I can use in my future professional endeavors: communication, marketing, organization, and time-management This internship has better prepared me for a future professional career in policymaking, where collaboration and compromise are important principles.
