Two Global Affairs Majors Take First Place at Model African Union Assembly

Eunchong Yim and Sujin Yang, sophomores majoring in Global Affairs at Mason Korea, recently earned first place at the 7th Model African Union (AU) Assembly, receiving recognition from the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Representing Namibia, the duo showcased outstanding leadership and insight throughout the event.

The two-day assembly, hosted by the Korea-Africa Foundation and the National Assembly Forum for Africa, took place at the Korean National Assembly. The event brought together 80 youth delegations, chairs, and mentors to address two key agendas: Educating an African Fit for the 21st Century and The Role of the African Union in Strengthening Cooperation with the Global South.

Yim, who also won the Best Delegate Award at the 2024 Korea International Model United Nations (KIMUN) and is currently a student fellow at Mason Korea's Center for Security and Policy Studies (CSPS Korea), credits her success to academic and extracurricular experiences. “This experience has deepened my interest in global governance. It’s fascinating to explore specific issues of a region and the dynamics of regional cooperation for peace and security,” she said, adding, “I’m inspired to study Africa more deeply.”

As the former Secretary General of MK-MUN (Model United Nations at Mason Korea), Yang has honed her skills in overseeing the MUN process and realized the power of teamwork. Through her work addressing educational disparities affecting gender and disabled groups, she has sharpened her ability to analyze official reports and databases. "I now have the confidence to tackle large projects, remain patient, and foster communication to find peaceful and efficient solutions to global issues," she said.

"It was an honor to participate in such a high-quality event and collaborate with talented delegates and chairs," Yang continued. "Winning first prize has reinforced my aspirations to engage in real-world forums and discussions that drive meaningful change.”

As part of their reward, Yim and Yang will visit the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. “We’re thrilled to experience something tangible following our model conference. Someday, we hope to participate in actual discussions with representatives from around the world,” said Yim.
