Section Information for Fall 2024

This course takes media as a lens to examine the cultural, political, and economic dimensions of globalization. We begin by examining historical attempts to democratize international communication systems and technologies and then move to examine a series of topics related to media globalization, such as: the role of media in nation-building, pop culture as soft power, international news reporting, transnational capital in television and film production, the political-economic tensions embedded in media streaming services, digital activism, and information overload.

The course analyzes media technologies from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on critical approaches in communication, cultural studies, anthropology, sociology, and art. In addition to our assigned readings and media, the course will include guest lectures from media industry professionals. Students will develop a final media project (e.g. podcast episode) on a topic of their choice related to course themes.
