Section Information for Spring 2025
Political debate is not just happening in Parliament, but also in our social media feeds and our favorite entertainment programming. In this class, we explore the role of humor, in particular, in shaping the way we talk and think about politics. We will start the course by discussing some theoretical frameworks related to democracy and public sphere debate as well as humor and satire. From there, we will move on to a series of case studies from around the world that will allow us to explore the potential for (and the limits of) memes, comedy shows, and fictional programming to spark debate and effect political change.
This course serves as a Concentration course for MCC (Media, Culture, and Communication), GLGV (Global Governance), and GIR (Global Inequalities and Responses).
