This seminar will survey and compare the nature and outcome of economic models and development strategies adopted in the Middle East and North Africa since the end of World War II, with a focus on recent adjustments and reforms triggered by globalization, while assessing the various challenges facing the region in terms of demographic and environmental pressures, inclusive economic growth and job creation, and their relationship to the Arab Spring uprisings. It will explore the interconnection between political and economic history, Islam, the legacies of colonialism, systems of governance, and the role of international organizations on economic policy and development choices, as well as the dramatic impacts of demographic and social transformations.

The class is taught in seminar format, where participation and attendance are essential to learning.
