As an undergraduate at Yale, Professor McDow focused on Bantu languages, and his fascination with Swahili led him to Arabic, and Arabic has granted him new insights on documents in east African archives. In connecting the worlds of Arab migrants in east Africa in the nineteenth century, Professor McDow has moved through the contemporary networks that connect eastern Africa and the Arabian peninsula to carry out research in Tanzania, Burundi, and Oman.
