Survey of D.C. Metropolitan Area Immigrant Communities
Tuesday, February 11, 2014 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM EST
Commerce Building, 3rd floor
The Institute for Immigration Research at George Mason University is holding an informational and discussion session for an exciting new survey project we hope to conduct in the spring of 2014. Existing data, collected primarily by the U.S. Census Bureau, provides a wide-ranging, but shallow, overview of immigrant communities. Our goal is to create a new, confidential, in-depth and original data source describing the immigrant experience. Possible topics include:
- Integration in and with the local geographic community and culture
- Means and intensity of communication with ones country of origin
- Economic, political and social participation
- Consumer patterns, including but not limited to housing and food
- Experiences with discrimination
We can’t cover all of these topics; nor is this list exhaustive. For this reason we are actively seeking research partners to help us identify the most relevant topics, help us build trust among area residents, and secure resources to conduct the survey. In return, partners will learn the most recent and accurate information and trends about their communities, their issues, needs and strength, and how they are similar to and different from other immigrant and native residents of the D.C. metropolitan area.
The next information session is scheduled for February 11, 10:00AM at the Institute for Immigration Research: 4087 University Drive, Fairfax, VA 22032. Third Floor. For questions and to rsvp contact: Safiya Khalid [skhalid6@gmu.edu].
