For Editors of Global Affairs Website

Welcome to CHSSWeb2! We have a help website: chssweb2.gmu.edu. If you are having problems with something and can't find what you need, please contact us at chssweb@gmu.edu. Please feel free to provide us with feedback on the help site and suggestions for additions or changes.

Changes

  1. Pages and sections are ordered to follow the main navigation. First, the home page, then For-Editor, then Contact, followed by the main links from the left navigation top to bottom. Don't move any of the main pages into or out of a section, as that will change the URL and the link from the main left hand navigation will break.
  2. New best practices in web advise editors not to embed hyper links in the text itself, but to put the links relevant to a page in resource groups at the end of the page. We redid that for many of the current global affairs pages. This is current best web practice because it makes keeping links updated more easily. You can put the same resource links on multiple pages without having to update them in more than one place.

Suggestions

  1. As far as possible, avoid putting links inside text; better practice is to create resource groups with those links. Minimizes broken links and misnamed pages down the line. We did this for many of your pages, but something to keep in mind as you make new ones. We'll go over this at the training session.
  2. In Course Info section, there was a page named Past Graduate Courses. Wasn't sure what to do with this because it is a description of all courses, but seems to be out of date and it has a strange name for its content. We don't think this is linked to anywhere on your current site. You might want to delete this page or rename it. Ask us if you have any questions.
  3. Do you have a need to keep the pages for courses for past semesters? Do you want to make an archive page for students to access? If that is important to you, let us know and we'll show you how to do it.
  4. About Global Affairs Courses page: This is not in the section Course Info because it is a link from the main navigation on the left and if it is in the section, the URL will change and the link will break. Don't move it into a section.
  5. More a note than a suggestion: You have a page Undergrad Research, but it isn't linked anywhere. I presume it is still in progress, since it mentions honors program. If it is to be used, suggest you put the links into a resource group.
  6. There is a page: Student Organizations. It is the last page in the pages view. It doesn't seem to be linked anywhere. Did you want to add it to a resource group on one of the pages? Also, it is not clear whether this is for undergrad, grad, or both. So if you plan to link it up somewhere, you should probably make that clear and move it into either the Graduate or the Undergraduate section.
  7. There is a page: Foreign Language Proficiency in the Graduate section, but there was nothing on the page. We  added information from the application requirements page. Check it out; maybe you want to change something or add more information about how students can demonstrate proficiency. We moved it to the Prospecctive section and added it to the resource group: Resources for Prospective Graduate Students in Global Affairs.
