Degree: MA in Global Affairs
I choose George Mason based upon its strong commitment to promoting an inclusive and professional environment.
My area of study was global health. I felt this was a great fit, based upon my 37 years in the Navy as a healthcare professional. It also provided an opportunity to further hone my skills and share some experiences with my fellow students.
My capstone was a systematic review of HIV stigma among men who have sex with men: associated factors, impact, and reduction strategies. I chose this topic because I have a strong interest in stigma and its impact on the LGBTQ+ community.
Most impactful course: My most impactful class was GLOA 710: Seminar Abroad in Nepal. This experience took me out of my comfort zone constantly and is something I will never forget. The Nepalese people are wonderful, very resourceful, and self-sufficient. Visiting a sustainable farm, as part of our trip, taught me several lessons on resourcefulness—I milked a cow and killed a chicken (with some help) that the class ate for lunch.
Favorite George Mason memory: Meeting all the great people, both my fellow students and the professors. I'm a little sad to think it's coming to a close.
Advice for future George Mason graduate students: Work hard, take advantage of all the resources available to you, and be ready to make lifetime friends.
